The Indian aviation industry is one of the world’s fastest growing and leading aviation industries. The government's open sky aviation policy has led to many domestic and international players entering this segment market and the industry has been steadily growing in terms of players and fleet of aircrafts. Today, private airlines add up for about 70% to 75 % share of the domestic aviation market in India.

India is the world’s 9th largest aviation market. Citing the Ministry of Civil Aviation, approximately 29 million passengers traveled to and from India during the year 2008. This is a nearly 30% growth on the previous year. Moreover, with flexible aviation schemes, incentives in place, international connectivity and more opportunities, 65 foreign airlines from 45+ countries are flying into India. It is predicted that international passengers will grow to about 50 million by the year 2015. Several planned schemes and processes are in place to boost growth in the civil aviation sector. The government plans to invest around 8 to 9 billion USD to modernize existing airports by 2010 and also plans to develop around 300 unused airstrips.

By the year 2020, our Indian airports are expected to handle and manage more than 100 million fliers including 50 to 60 million domestic passengers and around 3 million tonnes of cargo per year. India ranks 4th after the US, China and Japan in terms of domestic passenger volume. The domestic aviation sector is expected to grow at a rate of approximately 10% to clock a level of more than 150 million passengers by 2020.
